Visit of the Hunterian Society to Highgate Cemetery (West)
The Society enjoyed an excellent guided tour of this fascinating cemetery, one of the Magnificent Seven, and paid respects to the graves of William Clift (first curator of the Hunterian Museum), Henry Gray (of Gray’s Anatomy), and Robert Liston (the first surgeon in this country to perform a major operation under anaesthesia), among other medical dignitaries.
The symbolism of graves was explained and we saw many examples of Victorian monuments and tombs as well as the catacombs and many thanks to our knowledgeable guide, one of the Cemetery volunteers.
The group then adjourned to the Flask pub in Highgate Village for a pub lunch.
